On July 19, 2012 Hartford County Farm Bureau and Stanton Equipment hosted a workshop to familiarize emergency responders with farming equipment to prepare them for responding to farm accidents.   Approximately 100 people attended, representing fire, police and emergency medical departments from communities including Avon, Watertown, Ellington, South Windsor, Broad Brook plus others.

 

After the introductory remarks, guests rotated among three stations to learn about the idiosyncracies of different types of farm equipment.  When moments count, even the basics of how to shut off a piece of equipment could save a life. 

Eight Connecticut Farm Bureau's Young Farmer Committee members attended the Young Farmers and Ranchers Conference held February 4-7, 2011 in Orlando, Florida.  The conference was held at a Disney resort and many notable figures were in attendance to give presentations including Jim Lovell of NASA and Ken Shmidt of Harley-Davidson. CFBA Young Farmers Committee Treasurer Erin Pirro was also a presenter at the conference. In attendance at the Conference were Louis and Deb Lipton, Rebecca Baker, Jonathan Eddy, Eric Maliga, Jackie Patry, Erin Pirro and Zach Olson.

Connecticut Farm Bureau exhibited at Ag Day, featuring bison wild rice and barley soup delivered by the Tanners of Creamery Brook Bison Farm of Brooklyn and served by the Women's Committee. Governor M. Jodi Rell stopped by to taste this unique treat, served by Sydney Mintz, Alyce Block and Laura Fonicello. Joan Nichols and Ashley McCullough, CFBA staff, also helped at the exhibit passing out Farm Bureau membership applications, and answering questions. 

 

 

Connecticut Farm Bureau (CFBA) coordinated its first annual statewide conference on March 4, "Farming and Inland Wetlands Forum: What Every Agricultural Producer Needs to Know." More than 150 attended the day-long event at Maneely's in South Windsor. A partnership effort of USDA Risk Management Agency, UCONN Cooperative Extension System and CFBA, the conference was intended to provide participants with an understanding of how the Wetlands and Watercourses Act,( CGS Sec.22a-36 through 22a-45) applies to farming operations. In addition, emphasis was also placed on how farmers should work with municipal wetlands agencies.
